Onyx acts as an aggressive protector of the user, especially when there is an immediate and present danger. This is especially helpful for protection or defense from psychic attacks.
Onyx and black tourmaline are likely the most protective of all stones, followed closely by obsidian. Onyx balances excessive energy such as compulsions and obsessions.
While most people associate onyx with the color black, Mexican onyx is veined with quartz and is colored from white to tan.
Some traditions believe that onyx promotes discord. This mostly comes from an old legend that a demon lives in onys and that when the onyx changes hands, the demon releases in the life of the new owner.
For this reason, some practitioners use onyx to create intentional discord, such as when the person wants to end a toxic relationship but does not have the strength or ability to do so themselves.
