Bright Blessings.
I think it’s fair to say people hating on their degrees is an internet trend right now. It seems like every day I read an article where someone laments that they feel their degree is “worthless.”
No, it isn’t, and I will tell you why.
I understand people’s frustrations. It’s more difficult to get a job and that’s because the culture of screening applicants has changed. In the recent past, you walked in the door, asked for an application, and sat down on a comfee couch and filled it out in person. People wanted to make sure you could read and write and they wanted to look at you- and smell you- to see if they were interested in having you on the premises.
Now, it’s all online, and a lot of employers have AI technology filter applicants. You have to submit a resume, hand type an application, and do a questionnaire. You can be the most qualified candidate, but hundreds of applicants will boot you out because your application or resume has ONE word that triggered your application being scrapped.
A lot of employers want many years of experience- but they don’t want to pay very much- and they want you to have unlimited work availability every day all three shifts. They want to call you on your time off- and jobs that can be done remotely want you in the office so they can micromanage and justify their manager’s titles. These very same people love to say “Nobody wants to work anymore.” A lot of people have a hard time getting a job in the field their degree is in and they have to take other jobs they are not interested in just to pay the bills.
I know someone who has the same job as a family member and the same pay. Their family member has no degrees, and the person I know has two. The company will not promote the person I know. I know someone who recently got their phlebotomy degree and nobody wanted to hire them because they had just finished classes and had not worked in the field yet. Multiple people with decades of experience and multiple degrees cannot find jobs because they are over the age of 50. Then people who got a skilled laborer’s license are making over $50K per year and have no school loans to pay back.
So I get it. There is no sense in all the struggle people are going through to get jobs.
However, your degree still counts and you are better off with it than without it.
When people see you have education, it shows them you can do long term projects. It takes months or years to complete courses of study, and this demonstrates you have the dedication to finish what you started. Classes teach skills and they also provide knowledge. Employers like employees whose minds can be expanded. You will almost never find a job where everything is done one way forever. You must learn new techniques and ways of doing things. Maybe your forms you fill out change, or the way you rewire electrical changes because codes change- but you have to be able to learn and adapt on the job. Educational credentials demonstrate you can do that.
The more skills you have, the more things you can do, and the more valuable you are to a company. They may shift you from one department to another, or add or take away from your job tasks. The more you can do, the more you help the company. If you demonstrate you can also do continuing education-m or improve – they will feel like you are growing regularly, and can help the company grow. Can you train people as well as be trained to do more? Can you adapt to pressure, stress, changing workloads, and location changes? Employers appreciate these things even more.
Magic is about getting results. If you want to accomplish a goal, find out what it takes, and then do that. If that is the only magic you ever do, you will be one successful witch!
My husband never finished his degree, but he almost did. He fell into industrial printing and was making more per hour than starting pay in his degree fields did- so he scrapped the degree. The employer liked the fact he had some college classes under his belt. Soon, he was supervising and training because he soaked up new skills like a sponge from day one. Soon, he was a plant manager- without that degree- but with a hell of a lot of continuing education. He’s 60 now and tired of being the man in charge so he is a secondary manager. They called and asked him to take the first shift overseer position this week, and he broke their hearts by turning it down. A lot of guys there come in, do the minimum, and throw a fit people who work harder, learn new things, and support the company get paid more.
I got a job, then took online classes- outperformed “professional” consultants, and AI, and I am therefore the one with the job.
Degrees, classes, and skills training are powerful magic in your career- and will make a difference. So, learn, grow, and improve constantly like only a magical person could. It will pay off- even if people complain on the internet that it doesn’t.
Blessed Be.
