The Great Balancing Act: Welcoming the Spring Equinox

By Katrina Rasbold

As the wheel turns to the Vernal Equinox, the world pauses for a singular, breathtaking moment of perfect equilibrium. Day and night stand as equals, holding hands across the threshold of the seasons. Here at Green Egg, we’ve always seen the Equinox not just as a date on a calendar, but as the “hatching” of a new reality.

If your winter felt like a long hibernation of the soul, you aren’t alone. But look closely: Gaia is breathing again.

The Liturgy of the Soil

In the tradition of our Earth-centered path, the Spring Equinox (or Ostara) is the “Quickening.” It is the moment when the energy of the Earth shifts from the deep, internal work of the roots to the radical, visible push of the shoots.

For the modern practitioner, this is a time to move beyond seeing the land as a resource and instead seeing it as a living liturgy. Whether you are tending a sprawling permaculture garden or a single pot of herbs on a city windowsill, you are participating in the Awakening of Gaia. As you clear away the leaf litter of last year, ask yourself: What internal “clutter” am I clearing to make room for my own growth?

The Symbolism of the Egg

It is no coincidence that our magazine bears the name of the most potent symbol of this season. The Egg represents the “Cosmic Egg”—the universe in potential. It is the ultimate liminal object: a hard, protective shell containing the fluid, golden promise of life.

This Equinox, we invite you to honor the Egg. Paint them with the colors of the sunrise, bury them (biodegradable ones!) in your garden to gift the soil, or simply hold one in your hands and meditate on the “unhatched” dreams you’ve been carrying through the dark months.

A Ritual of Equilibrium

Because the Equinox is the point of balance, it is the perfect time for a Rebalancing Rite.

  1. The Threshold: Stand in a doorway—the literal liminal space of your home.

  2. The Elements: Place a bowl of salt (Earth) and a bowl of water (Sea) on one side, and light a green candle (Sky/Life) on the other.

  3. The Breath: Breathe in the cool air of the passing winter; breathe out the warm intent of the coming summer.

  4. The Vow: Renew your pledge to the Earth. In the words of our community’s history: “We walk the earth in friendship, not in dominance.”

Moving Forward

The “Old Religion” has entered a “New Information Age,” but the heartbeat of the Earth remains the same. As the sun begins its steady climb and the days grow longer than the nights, let your spirit expand with the light.

Don’t rush through this threshold. Stay in the balance for a moment. Feel the quickening. The Green Egg is hatching once again.

What is also hatching and due to erupt tomorrow (March 21) is our Spring issue of The Green Egg Magazine. To order your copy, go to www.greeneggmagazine.com

Happy Equinox to all our kin across the globe. May your spring be fertile, your heart be balanced, and your path be green.
