Herbalism For Your Day: Cascara Sagrada

By Katrina Rasbold

Cascara sagrada grows in the Pacific Northwest and is an extract from the bark of the buckthorn tree. You will noticed that we previously covered the wonderful effects of buckthorn in an earlier column. Interestingly, like buckthorn, cascara sagrada was one of the first magical herbs I used in my practice.

Cascara sagrada is used for good luck in financial and legal issues. I include it in the money drawing loose incense I make. Carried into court in one’s pocket, it encourages a favorable outcome, especially when you add calendula and tobacco to the bundle.

It is also good for general home blessings and personal blessings when burned in an incense mix. Allow the smoke to waft over you and let your spirit drink in its magical influences.

Sprinkle cascara Sagrada across your threshold and sweep it into your house to bring prosperity and good fortune to those who live there.

Because of its natural laxative properties, cascara sagrada is great for getting things moving and eliminating spiritual blockages.
