Tarot Talk – Page of Cups

By Katrina Rasbold

“Tarot Talk” is a once-a-week reading with a deep exploration of the card we pull. What are some aspects of the card (as per the original Pamela Colman Smith artwork) that  add extra dimensions to the interpretation? How does that tell us what to focus on in the coming week? This week’s card is…

THE PAGE OF CUPS

Innovative ideas pop up from unexpected places and lend excitement to new ventures. This page may also identify a young person who is very loving, sensitive, emotional, and prone to having his or her feelings easily hurt.  Pages represent messages, as in “You are being paged.” In this case, the Page of Cups brings a message that evokes an emotional response or causes an emotional shift.

A Deeper Look:

Consider that in the image, a fish pops his head up from inside a cup – definitely not expected.

The pages are the youngest of the court cards, which brings with them a bit of innocence and an unjaded excitement for what is to come. This page wears a blue hat that culiminates in the shape of an ocean wave and behind him, the water is in motion, churning and moving. Water represents emotion and intuition. In this case, his emotions are literally over his head, so the message is that this is a feeling time, not a thinking time.

His tunic is decorated with a number of lotus flowers, which indicate purity of intention, as well as fertility, growth, and rebirth against the blue background of intuition and emotions.

The cup itself is yellow. Not gold, as we might expect from a brass cup. We know Pamela Colman Smith included gold colors in her color palette by noticing the color of the Page’s boots and the ground on which he stands and yet for the cup, she chose bright yellow, which is the color of joy and happiness.

What to Focus On This Week:

Widen your net and think outside of your usual mental box. We all develop routine and predictable ways of thinking and problem solving and this card encourages you to be more accepting of different ideas that present that you would normally dismiss. Try a new approach. Put your usual tool box in the closet and expect surprises and solutions that appear in unexpected places. New ideas manifest that you may not have considered before that take a situation in an interesting direction. You may receive information that elicits an emotional reaction (positive or negative). Go with your feelings over your intellect.
