Raven Digitalis strikes gold yet again with this anthology of dark short stories sure to set your teeth on the edge of your seat. Each of the thirteen stories included in this collection not only carries with it a sense of tremendous unease, but also a haunting sense of familiarity. The stories are certainly chilling, but they pluck the strings of our common fears, primarily loneliness and vulnerability.
Another sharp fingernail that runs down your spine as you read these stories is the notion that ordinary people come into close contact with dark forces on a regular basis. One of the stories Raven chose for this book is by Edgar Allen Poe and he fits right in. Had the authors not been identified in the story’s heading, I could easily have believe that Poe wrote any of these haunting tales.
Selkies, Witches, Demons, HooDoo Mamas, Vampires, and yes, Crows, all take a starring role in these stories. Most impacting to me was the profoundly claustrophobic story, “Don’t Forget to Feed.” No topic is taboo and no subject is off limits in this soul-gripping and genuinely scary grown-up anthology.
