The Radical Act of Independence: Claiming Your Sovereign Landscape

Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of flawed, complicated radicals sat in a humid room in Philadelphia and did something entirely treasonous: they signed a declaration claiming absolute sovereignty over their own lives, their own fortunes, and their own sacred honor. They drew a hard line of non-encroachment against a distant, dominant tyranny.

Today, as our backyards fill with the scent of charcoal and the concussive boom of fireworks, it is easy to let “Independence Day” dissolve into simple consumerism and passive nostalgia.

But if we look at the state of our world—if we hold up a mirror to the heavy, pressing realities of our current political climate—we quickly realize that independence is not a historical event we inherit. It is a radical, ongoing act of spiritual warfare that we must wage every single day.

As earth-centered practitioners, true patriotism has nothing to do with blind allegiance to a flag or a state. True patriotism is an allegiance to the land itself, to the diverse community that inhabits it, and to the fierce defense of the sovereign spaces we possess.

Colonizing the Self

In our Summer 2026 issue, our central focus is Sovereign Landscapes: Defending the Body, the Faith, and the Earth. This theme wasn’t born out of abstract theology; it was born from a collective alarm clock screaming that the boundaries of personal autonomy are under aggressive, coordinated assault.

Tyranny rarely starts by conquering vast territories; it starts by trying to colonize the intimate landscape of the individual.

  • It attempts to invade and legislate the sanctuary of your physical flesh, stripping away reproductive destiny and medical freedom.

  • It attempts to bulldoze over religious plurality, weaponizing a dominant dogma to turn public spaces into a spiritual monoculture.

  • It treats the Living Earth not as our sacred mother, but as a mere storehouse of corporate resources to be plundered for profit.

When we see these three battlefronts clearly, we realize they are not separate political talking points. They are a single, interconnected ecosystem. To allow an oppressor to encroach upon one is to permit the desecration of the whole.

The Witches’ Declaration of Non-Encroachment

Our ancestors knew that there is a limit to grace. They knew that once a line is crossed, the consequences become a matter of Natural Law. Sometimes, the most deeply spiritual, evolutionary thing you can do is finally stand up, step away from the hive-mind, and say: “No more.”

If you are fresh out of ideas on how to celebrate freedom today, stop looking at the skyward displays and turn your gaze inward. Your magic cannot remain passive or hidden in private circles while the landscape around you is contested. It must flow through your hands, your feet, and your voice.

This July 4th, I challenge you to draft your own personal Declaration of Non-Encroachment. Grab a piece of paper, step out onto the earth, and explicitly declare your independence from the forces trying to conquer your peace:

  1. Sovereignty of the Body: Declare that your flesh is a sacred temple, an extension of the Living Earth, and that no state or system has authority over your intimate healthcare, your identity, or your authentic expression.

  2. Sovereignty of the Faith: Declare your unyielding right to walk your path, honor your gods, and practice your craft without impediment, surveillance, or fear.

  3. Sovereignty of the Mind: Banish the toxic anxiety, the engineered vitriol, and the digital noise bleeding into your sanctuary from the outside world.

Guard Your Boundaries

We have survived the inquisitions, the kings, and the tyrants of old; we will survive the fools of this age. But survival requires us to be awake, organized, and entirely unapologetic. We must care for the rights of “the other” as fiercely as we care for our own, because nature thrives on variation, and diversity is our ultimate shield.

So fire up the grill, pass the pipe, or pour a libation for the land spirits. But do it with a clear, sharp focus. Remember the feeling of absolute fullness, hold the line of your boundaries, and tend your corner of the earth with an unshakeable, sovereign spirit.

The circle is cast, the lines are drawn, and we will resist until the ideas of “freedom” and “liberty and justice for all” apply to everyone.

Blessed Be.
