Stone Magic: Lapis Lazuli

By Katrina Rasbold

This azure blue stone with its occasional gold and green intrusions is a favorite of many, not just for its beautiful appearance, but also for the magical qualities it imbues on the wearer/carrier, including special protective qualities for children.

Raw Lapis Lazuli

One of the most interesting qualities of lapis Lazuli (shortened to “lapis” by most of its fans) is that it protects the physical body while undergoing spiritual actualization. Those who have trained in healing systems such as Reiki know that the body responses to the energy changes enacted by new knowledge and energy elevations. These are known as “physical crises” and can involve illnesses, fatigue, or other physical manifestations of energy shifts.

This happens not only as the body recalibrates to integrate the new energy, but also to allow for stillness and rest as that happens. Lapis helps to mitigate those effects by improving energy circulation and energetic healing.

Polished lapis

Lapis is one of the oldest stones recorded as used for magical/energetic purposes. It is durable and unlike some stones (turquoise, for instance), is does not mar or chip easily. The occasional gold and green striations are pyrite (“fool’s gold”) intrusions with the color distinction coming from varying levels of heat to which the pyrite was exposed while it was forming.

Associated with creating access to universal wisdom, lapis promotes mental acuity, wisdom, good judgment, increased psychic awareness, and inner vision. For that reason, it was often the gemstone of choice for royalty.

Lapis does not pair well energetically with other stones and prefers to work alone, so in jewelry, it should not be combined with other gemstones if you want to achieve the best energetic effect.

Overmining and recent trade restrictions greatly increased the availability, and therefore the cost, of quality lapis lazuli.
