Practical Magic with Saoirse: Somebody Put a Curse on Me! (No, They Didn’t)

By Lady Saoirse

Bright Blessings,

There are a lot of things I love about being a Tarot reader. I get to go spend time with my magical family at the shop where I read, and I get to help people. I remember many times when I was a baby witch that various readers helped me on my path, and I’ll bet they didn’t even know they were helping. To follow their example is a great honor, and I hope that I’m able to help people like Tarot readers have helped me.

Having said that, there are things that are not fun about being a reader. One thing that never stops is people come and tell me they have been cursed. It is true that curses are real, however a lot of people have so much faith in curses that they have no faith in their ability to make decisions in their own lives. They come asking people to sell them things to break the curse. While I’m not going to discourage people from buying talismans, crystals, oils, candles, or other things for protection I don’t believe in lying. Not every time something goes wrong with your life is because a curse.

Whenever somebody says they are cursed, I ask them why they think that and what is happening. They say things are going wrong and they think somebody else is causing it. That is always the answer no matter who tells me they are cursed. TV and movies do a great job entertaining us with fictional stories of scary witches or Romany elderly ladies flinging powerful curses that destroy people’s lives. If only they had not pissed off the witch all would be well! That’s fiction. In real life, most of the time, you are not cursed and even if you are, you can break the curse.

A lot of times when things go wrong in life, we look for someone else to blame instead of accepting that perhaps we’re making bad decisions that are affecting us negatively. Sometimes we do not make bad decisions and bad things just happen anyways. If the second things go wrong you immediately become paranoid and start accusing people of throwing curses at you, you need to take a step back and be objective. It is true that some people have the power to sling curses and there are countless spells circulating that the mainstream can get a hold of quite easily to curse someone. However, the focus and ability to sling an effective curse takes a lot of skill, a lot of energy, and a lot of work. Most of the time if someone is mad enough to curse you, you can tell who has. Even if a witch is mad doesn’t mean they cursed you- even if they said they did.  Even if they did the spell, that doesn’t mean it is going to work. Chances are you have not been cursed. You just think you have been.

What should you do if you think that someone has put a curse on you? There are various steps to take to make sure that you get out of a curse, if it even is a curse. It entails regular shielding, banishing, energy work, and protection. There are some techniques you can use.

Banish

Repel energy that you don’t want. If you are going to work magic, practicing spells often is not the first thing you should learn. It is banishing and shielding. Some people effectively do this by consciously sending energy away. Just speaking aloud to it and saying “No” can be effective. Some people do the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram often, and Christians use prayers.

Protect

Protecting yourself can entail planting protective things like roses with thorns or sage or burning the proper incense. Jewelry can keep things away from you, and a lot of people wear the symbol of their faith to do that. Mirrors that have been blessed can shield you from malevolent energy.  Bags of blessed protective things like iron can be buried under the doorstep, and salt can be laid in the windowsills to protect you. Holy water can be sprinkled around the outside boundary lines of the home, and some of us wear all black for protection. Your ancestors can be asked for protection and believe it or not, having a cat provides a lot of protection.

Stop Worrying

If you are banishing, shielding, and using protective magic, it will be very rare a curse can even get through all that good magic. Even if somebody tries, you don’t have to allow a curse to set in. The number one way people get to us in through our minds. If you BELIEVE someone has cursed you, then you will suffer, and everything that goes wrong is going to reinforce your belief they have power over you. You can literally curse yourself by freaking out thinking you are cursed. Just don’t give other people power over your mind. Control the energy that surrounds you. It’s your life, and your right to live free of worry and unfettered by other people’s negative energy.

Blessed B
