There is a brief, magical window of time in late May where the entire earth seems to take a collective breath. The frantic energy of early spring—the clearing of brush, the planting of seeds, and the ecstatic dancing of Beltane—has passed. The frantic heat of the Summer Solstice is not quite here yet.
Right now, we are in the thick of the growing season.
For many modern Pagans, this can actually be a difficult transition. Our community thrives on beginnings and endings; we love the clean slate of Samhain, the crisp hope of Ostara, and the bright fires of Beltane. But what do we do when the initial excitement wears off and the daily work of maintenance begins?
The Magic of the Middle
In the agricultural cycle, this is the time of weeding, watering, and watching. It is not glamorous. You cannot harvest the tomatoes yet, and you cannot celebrate the first sprouts because they are already a foot high.
This is the phase of cultivation.
In your personal life, look at the projects, intentions, or relationships you initiated over the last two months. The initial spark of inspiration is gone, replaced by the mundane, daily steps required to keep those intentions alive.
-
The Weeding: What distractions, old habits, or doubts are starting to choke out the intentions you set at the beginning of spring? This week is the time to pluck them out gently but firmly.
-
The Watering: How are you feeding your spirit right now? When the initial excitement fades, we must rely on discipline and daily practices to keep our inner soil hydrated.
-
The Watching: Trust the process. You do not need to dig up the seed every day to check if it is growing. Trust that Gaia is doing her work beneath the surface.
Let yourself rest in this mid-spring pause. The fruit will come in its own time. For now, find the sacred in the routine.
