Herbalism For Your Day: Pennyroyal

By Katrina Rasbold

Pennyroyal was the name of a Girl Scout camp near where I grew up, but it is also the name of a versatile healing herb used for hundreds of years. I’m pretty sure those facts are somehow related.

Magically, it prevents travel exhaustion and jet lag if you carry it somewhere on your body, such as in your shoe. If you carry it in your luggage, your suitcase will have a great trip but you might not.

Pin a sprig of it to your shirt to ward off evil eye or add it to rosemary to make a protective wreath or bundle and hang it by your front door to protect your home.

Pennyroyal is an herb of peace and it can soothe arguments if you give it to someone with whom you are in conflict.

Pennyroyal is sacred to the goddess Demeter and is an herb of initiation in the Elusian tradition.

This herb is an emmenagogue and, depending on the dosage, can bring on a sluggish menstrual period or act as an abortive in early pregnancy. Never use except under the guidance of an expert.
